Dentons advised on the following award-winning transaction:

• Mergers and Acquisitions Deal of the Year

In April 2023, Rogers Communications completed its historic CA$26 billion acquisition of Shaw Communications. Bill Jenkins and Bill Gilliland led the team that advised the Shaw Family Trust, the controlling shareholder in this transaction.

We are proud to have also partnered with some of Canada’s leading legal teams on the following finalist cases and deals, and we extend our congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients and excellence awardees.

• Capital Markets Deal of the Year – In April 2023, Magnet Forensics Inc. announced the closing of a CA$1.8 billion plan of arrangement with US-based company Thoma Bravo. Dentons advised the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of Magnet Forensics Inc., leading the negotiations of the acquisition and playing an instrumental role in the structuring of this cross-border transaction which involved navigating many related party issues, including requiring a valuation, dual share classes and multiple votes. The legal team was led by Jason Saltzman and Thomas Redekopp, and included Rocky Swanson, Larry Nevsky, Ausra Deluard, Kirsten Thompson, Panagiota Dafniotis, Matthew Fleming and Ara Basmadjian.

• Insolvency & Restructuring Deal of the Year – In Groupe Selection's financial restructuring under the Canadian Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, Roger P. Simard successfully represented the Laurentian Bank of Canada.

• Commercial Litigation Team of the Year – Neil Rabinovitch and Emma Irving secured a victory in the case of Petty v. Niantic Inc., 2023 BCCA 315, setting a crucial precedent regarding digital consumer rights and interactive media law.
