2023 experienced continued volatility in global capital markets, persistent inflation, still rising central bank interest rates and uneasiness about a global recession, along with geopolitical turbulence. Canadian capital markets in general saw a year-over-year decline in market performance. While equity and debt underwriting activities picked up compared to 2022, private equity, mergers and acquisitions and venture capital financings were all impacted in 2023. Technology – generative AI, in particular – was most in the spotlight among industry sectors, whereas new equity raises were led by the energy, mining and power sectors.
