What Does The Future of AI Regulation Look Like?

The rapid and exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the globe has generated an important conversation about the need for comprehensive and consistent AI regulation. Despite some convergence among global stakeholders on the need for such regulation, the path forward remains unclear. In the US, lawmakers at the state and federal level are wrestling with the appropriate balance between encouraging innovation and tightening regulation. Globally, similar discussions are being had through Europe, Asia, and beyond.

But what if the current debate about AI regulation was missing the forest for the trees? How can governments regulate AI systems that are on a path to regulating themselves? What if we could encode and enforce AI laws directly in AI systems themselves? What if there were a different path forward?

Dentons recently co-authored a landmark report on AI titled, “The Future of Global AI Governance”. By combining the legal knowledge of Dentons, the AI acumen of VERSES, and standard guidance from the Spatial Web Foundation, the report proposes a new way of thinking about AI regulation by introducing a groundbreaking generation of socio-technical standards, AI ranking systems, and policy proposals that may help drive global discourse around the future of AI regulation.  

During the webinar, the report’s authors discussed the current challenges of the AI regulatory landscape, and possible pathways forward to align policymaking with the future trajectory of AI.
