In our third webinar in the Labour Spotlight series,  we provided an overview of the rights, obligations and practical considerations of employers in relation to the use of replacement workers during a labour dispute in different Canadian jurisdictions.

Set below are the high-level key takeaways from the presentation:

1. While Alberta allows employers to contract out to new workers when the employer’s existing workforce goes on strike, employers should be mindful of the potential for violence in these situations and institute additional security measures.
2. Québec and British Columbia are currently the only jurisdictions in Canada that ban the practice of contracting out.
3. The Federal government is considering banning the practice of contracting out for all federally regulated workplaces.
