On March 4^th, 2025, tariffs imposed at the rate of 25% on all Canadian and Mexican products went into effect. Then, on March 7, 2025, these tariffs were temporarily lifted for all Canadian and Mexican goods that comply with the country-of-origin requirements and eligibility of the United States Mexico Canada Free Trade Agreement (“USMCA Originating Products”). All “USMCA non-Originating Goods” are subject to the tariffs charged at a rate of 25%. This action highlights the importance of being able to substantiate USMCA Originating Product status, which generally requires detailed knowledge of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, the value and country-of-origin of each input item of the products crossing the border from Mexico and Canada to the United States as well as the HTS classification and value of the end-product.
